With 68.51% voting yes, Mahomet voters have approved the referendum that will allow an $84 million plan for new construction of a junior high on property already owned by the Mahomet-Seymour school district. The projected opening of the new junior high is in 2029.

In a statement released November 4, Superintendent Kenny Lee thanked the Mahomet-Seymour community for their participation in the referendum process, from learning and asking questions to casting their votes. “While perspectives may differ,” he wrote, “I believe we share a common commitment to providing students with a strong educational experience.”

School Board President Jordan Rock also expressed his appreciation and happiness with the results of this vote. “We as a board are grateful to the community for their trust and confidence with the plan that we put on the ballot,” he said. “Most importantly, we are excited for the future generation of students and teachers and staff that will occupy the building. We are excited for our community.”

When the election results have been certified, Lee said, the planning phase for the project will begin. He noted that throughout the process, the district is “committed to managing this project responsibly, maintaining transparency, and keeping our community informed along the way.”

Now that the use of funds is approved by voters, the next step in building the new junior high is selecting a construction manager to lead the project.
