The Candy Kernel Opens This Weekend in Eastwood Center
There’s a new spot to buy sweet and salty treats in town! The Candy Kernel, which is a branch of the Original Del’s Popcorn Shop in Decatur, is soft launching this weekend in Mahomet.

Del’s Popcorn Shop first opened in 1934 and manufactures popcorn, fudge, and other treats in house. The business primarily produces small-batch popcorn flame-popped in copper kettles, with flavors like traditional caramel corn, butter and salt, and a deluxe flavor with caramel corn plus almonds, pecans and coconut. A flavor collaboration with Goodfellas Fine Cigars in Decatur features bourbon and sea salt.
The Candy Kernel will sell Del’s popcorn, plus their fudge and roasted nut mixes. Beyond Del’s products, the store will offer nostalgic candies as well as modern favorites.
Maggie Howley, who has worked at Del’s for 17 years and owned the business since 2019, said that she was looking to expand out of Decatur into areas that are growing. Mahomet is the perfect spot, she said, with Eastwood Plaza offering good foot traffic in a “great community.” Howley is joined by a Mahomet-based business partner, Kelly McCammack, who will run the The Candy Kernel store.
