Playgrounds in Mahomet: Something for Everyone

Are you looking for new places to explore with your kids now that school is out for the summer? Mahomet boasts a wide range of playgrounds across town, and with a variety of equipment, sizes, and settings, there is something for everyone. Check out these playgrounds if…
Your kids are little — try Brooks-Warfel Park (405 E. Dunbar Street). With swings, a seated merry-go-round, and just one small playground structure, you’ll be able to see your kids at any spot on the playground. Even new walkers and climbers can handle the limited equipment, but there is still plenty to entertain big siblings. Trade-off: sometimes the nearby water plant smells!

You want shade — so frequently, it feels like parents and kids must bake in the sun to get their playground fix. Not so at the Main Playground in Lake of the Woods (201 Senna Drive). This medium-sized playground with swings in a sandy area plus a large play structure* with two levels sits under a canopy of trees, making it easy to stay cool and shaded. Trade-off: trees mean more bugs and dirt!

*At the time of publication, the slide at the Main Playground is boarded off. We checked in with the Lake of the Woods Site Superintendent and learned the following: “The main playground equipment is being considered for replacement with a more nature-based playground system in 2027 or 2028 depending on budget considerations. We continue to evaluate solutions to the big slide portion of the existing system which is closed for failing a safety check. Unfortunately, replacement parts can no longer be sourced. The big slide will remain closed until a safe solution can be implemented, or the playground equipment is replaced.”

Your kids have boundless energy — head to Barber Park (703 MacDougal Road) for a large playground (and splash pad in the summer months) where kids can swing, slide on low, medium, and high slides, traverse a climbing net, make music, and more. Especially on a beautiful day, Barber Park will be packed with families; kids will almost always make a friend. Trade-off: you may feel nervous about the tall height of the main structure, and the playground’s size means you may not always be able to see your children if they are running around.

Ample surface-lot parking

Picnic tables, but at the pavilion apart from the playground

You have bigs and littles — at Bridle Leash Park (902 W. Dianne Lane), separate play structures for big kids and little kids means you can keep everyone safely entertained. A big sand pit with trucks and toys is always a draw for digging. Trade-off: this playground’s parking lot is at a distance! Plan accordingly.
Medium
Parking lot, but not nearby
Swings, two play structures on mulch, sand pit, large field
Picnic table nearby

You are looking for something different — Brent Johnson Park (1202 E. Oak Valley Road) has your standard playground equipment: swings, a climbing wall, monkey bars, and multiple slides, as well as a large rock for free climbing. But the park also boasts a frisbee golf course, which provides a ton of wide-open space to run (or actually play the game)! Trade-off: there is no shade to be found at this spot!
Medium
Street parking
Swings, play structure on mulch, frisbee golf course
No picnic tables

These five municipal playgrounds offer an impressive amount of variety for kids of all ages!
