Plant-lovers Gather to Swap Plants, Stories and More

What is a Plant Swap and How does it Work?

Got too many house plants?  Need more?  Maybe you have a rare or unusual house plant you want to share with fellow enthusiasts?

This Saturday, March 14th  from 11:00 a.m. to Noon, Mahomet Public Library is hosting a free Plant Swap.  At this event, participants bring plants they no longer want or need, or that need a good adoptive home, and take home plants or cuttings to try something new.

How Does the Plant Swap Work?

11:00 – 11:30   Participants arrive with their plants, browse other plants that have been brought in, and mingle with fellow plant-lovers.  During this time, participants can “make a deal” to trade specific plants, ask questions, share tips for care and feeding, or just look around.  Materials will be available to label plants with type of plant and any care instructions.   For example, you might see:

Spider Plant – water every 5-10 days, partial sun

11:30 – Noon   Swaps happen and participants choose from among available options.

Does this only include house plants?  It can be full house plants, but garden plants, succulents, cuttings, seedlings, seeds, or propagations in soil are all fair game.    Participants may also bring spare pots, garden tools, or other plant care items they no longer need.

All plants should be in containers that you are willing to part with – the pots/containers go home with the plants.

One of the best parts of the Plant Swap is the opportunity to meet other people who share your passion for plants and to share ideas and practices, or to just see new things.

What if I Don’t Want to Take Anything Home?  You don’t have to.  Just bring what you have to share and visit with the other plant-lovers.

Don’t have anything to share?  Come anyway.  Many people bring much more than what they take, so there are extras for those who may be just getting started.

This free event is open to all ages and is held at Mahomet Public Library in the Edgar Meeting Room.  The library is located at 1702 E Oak St. in Mahomet.  Plenty of parking is available.  No registration is required.
