Mahomet Residents’ Quick Inclement Weather Guide
How bad will it get?
The current forecast in our immediate area is an expectation of 1-7” of snow accumulation. Heavy snow is not expected until Sunday, January 25, 2026.
As a reminder, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10-30 minutes when temperatures or wind chills fall below 0 degrees and depending on wind conditions.
Who will plow?
The Illinois Department of Transportation maintains all state and federal routes, including the removal of snow and ice (Rt. 150 and Rt. 47N and 47S). Our community has several unincorporated (not in Village) residential subdivisions that have streets maintained by Mahomet Township Road District or Champaign County Highway Department. Heavily traveled streets like North Prairieview Road, Lake of the Woods Road, Tin Cup Road, Golf Road, Turkey Farm Road, and nearly all Timberview Drive are not maintained by the Village.
What about sidewalks and other personal areas?
Technically, you are responsible for keeping the sidewalks in front of your property (or business) clear of snow and ice. Snow removal for sidewalks within the public right-of-way shall be the responsibility of the owner of the property adjacent to the sidewalk. (See Village Code §156.010 (H) Sidewalk snow removal.) That snow should not be deposited onto public streets and alleys. When shoveling your driveway, deposit the snow on the parkway to the right side as you face the street. That way, snowplows will not push the snow back into your drive.
The Village asks that, “As a courtesy, residents clear snow away from your mailboxes to allow mail carriers to deliver your mail in a safe manner…and to please help keep snow from piling around fire hydrants [as an] important safety measure.”
Where can I find supplies?
Ace Hardware in the Eastwood shopping district has all supplies stocked, including piles of ice melt close to the entrance as well as shovels and gloves indoors.
Schnuck’s has displays of hats and gloves (inside the exit near the cash registers) and ice melt available. A 10-pound bag of Road Runner is $5.49 as well as a 25-pound bag of Schnuck’s Premium Rock Salt for $6.64.
Dollar General at 602 S. Prairieview Rd. has at least a dozen snow shovels stocked and is fully stocked with bags of salt to mitigate ice accumulation on your drive or walkway. They also sell outerwear.
Casey’s General Store (102 S. Prairieview Rd.) has a few ice melts for purchase and a fair supply of firewood, priced at 3 for $22.
Please practice patience and gratitude for plow drivers, and keep children from playing unsupervised in dangerous plow areas.
Stay warm and look out for each other, Mahomet residents!
