School may be out for summer, but there are always opportunities to learn something new around town. Kids and adults alike can explore cultural history, marine biology, plant life and more at events taking place in Mahomet this week.


  • Did you know that people have been sliding into proverbial DMs for centuries? On Monday, June 1 and Wednesday, June 3, Museum of the Grand Prairie will explore the history of “calling cards” used to make introductions and connections among friends and acquaintances. Cultural Crafts: Calling Card has a family session (more info) as well as an adult session (more info). Free

  • This Wednesday, June 3, Mahomet Public Library will host its first Wonder Club for 2nd-5th graders who “wonder” about the natural world around them. Guardians of the Sea, hosted by local TV personality Jaclyn Friedlander, will cover a wide array of marine life. (Register) Free

  • Salted Spade kicks off its Spade Studio Garden Workshop series with DIY Nature Press on Thursday, June 4. 6-12 year-olds will have the opportunity to learn about preserving leaves and flowers through the art of pressing. (Register) $20

  • On Friday, June 5, head to The Hive for “Buzz Like a Bee: Story and Pollination Play.Kids will learn about pollinators through story time, movement, and crafts. (Registration required) Free

  • After all that educational fun, sit back and relax at the first of the Champaign County Forest Preserves Summer Concert Series on Saturday, June 6. Candy Foster & Shades of Blue will perform at the Peninsula near the lake, with Project 47 onsite offering food and drink for purchase.
