Know Before You Go: Family Fun Fridays

Parents of preschoolers likely know that Mahomet Public Library is the place to be on Friday mornings when the “Preschool Playdate” program runs during the school year. During the summer, MPL fills Friday morning with just as much fun – for the whole family. Here’s what you need to know before you go to the jam-packed programming slated for 10-11 a.m. each Friday in June and July.

What are the Family Fun Friday events? Where are they held? Every week features a different event theme, ranging from field day lawn activities to a magic show and a kids concert. All activities are geared toward children of pre-k through grade school ages and their caregivers (though some of the seated programming will be more appropriate for ages 4+). These events take place at Mahomet Public Library, outdoors on the lawn or indoors in the Edgar Room. Check out the full calendar here.
Do I need to register? Can I drop in? Registration is not required for any of these events. Many of them (particularly the lawn events) are open-ended drop-in events, and you can arrive anytime. That said, the programs featuring a performer are often standing-room-only, so it is advisable to arrive early. You might try playing in the library’s children’s area beforehand, so you are ready to grab a seat as soon as doors open! Doors usually open about ten minutes before the event, and it is not uncommon for families to be lined up in the hallway waiting.
We loved FFF last year. Will the events be the same?
This summer’s calendar features a mix of returning favorites and new programs.
“Bubblepalooza” (June 19) is a new theme, and the “Musical Instruments Petting Zoo” (July 10) has not been offered since 2023.
“Absolute Science” (June 12) is always a huge draw. This year they will offer a laser show, which is expected to be very popular.
Magicians also attract a crowd, and this year’s magic show will be presented by a new performer: Ms. Make Believe (June 26).
Champaign County Forest Preserve District has presented several programs at MPL, but this is the first year they are bringing insects to the library (July 31).
Lawn games, craft offerings, and BINGO will feel familiar to library patrons!
Any other tips for attending?
For outdoor events, dress for the weather and wear sunscreen, as the lawn is not shaded. In the case of rain, lawn programs will be swapped for a craft program in the Edgar room. You can also sign up for or record your minutes for the summer reading program before or after each event.
