This Week in Mahomet: August 3-8

In this final week of summer before M-S schools resume (on August 12), we’d like to remind Mahomet residents in need of assistance of several weekly opportunities to receive food and supplies. You can also check the Community Calendar “Assistance Programs” category for more events each month and learn more about those programs here.

• On Monday, August 3 (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) and Thursday, August 4 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) It Takes a Village Shop is open for those who need assistance. Free clothing, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies are available (601 E. Main Street Suite 107). Free

• Then, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church will host its weekly food pantry on Tuesday, August 4 (5-6 p.m., 501 W. State Street). Those in need can drive through for pre-packed bags of groceries and assorted fresh items such as eggs and meat. Free

• On Sunday, August 9 families with student(s) in the M-S school district can go to Mom’s Pantry to receive free food items, hygiene products and clothes (5-7 p.m., 302 W. State Street).

And below, a few selected events to keep community members of all ages learning, growing, and practicing hobbies together.

• Do you prefer a quieter community? On Wednesday, August 5, head to Yellow & Co. for Silent Book Club (6:30 p.m., 1830 Patton Drive Suite 2). Arrive early to grab a beverage and chat with others about your reading material and then settle in for an hour of quiet time with your book—together. Free

• Interested in receiving the certification necessary to obtain an Illinois hunting license? On Friday, August 7 (5-9:30 p.m.) and Saturday August 8 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will host a Hunter Safety Course covering “responsibility and ethics, safe firearm handling, firearm and ammunition identification, zones of fire, tree stand safety, rules and regulations, and more” (MPRD Multi-purpose Room, 218 S. Lake of the Woods Road). Students must attend both sessions. (Register here) Free

• For more outdoorsy activity, boys aged 8-18 can attend Kids Outdoor Zone on Saturday, August 8 at the Mahomet Sportsman’s Club (8-11 a.m., 705 W. Hickory Street). This boys group focuses on outdoor skills with a religious focus and is hosted by New Horizon Church. (More info) Free
