Do you ever wonder what happens at Village government meetings? In this new series, Everything Mahomet will provide monthly updates about Village business, summarizing routine meetings and providing context for any decisions that have been made.

First, here is a bit of background on what types of meetings occur in the Village:
At Planning and Zoning meetings, the Planning and Zoning Commission hears cases from the public and from Village staff relating to rezoning requests, text amendments to Village ordinances, and other similar issues. The PZC will pass on their recommendations to the Board of Trustees for a vote. “Planning & Zoning” refers to how land and property is developed in the village.
There are two Board of Trustees Study Sessions a month. Village staff and the public will present whatever topics they feel the board needs to address. The primary purpose of these sessions is to learn and ask questions; formal decisions are not made until the Board of Trustees meeting.
Finally, there is a Board of Trustees Meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month, when the Board debates and votes on whichever topics have made their way onto the docket.
At each meeting, members of the public will have an opportunity to bring up topics not on the agenda during the “Public Comment” portion of the meeting. After that, any cases on the agenda that include a “Public Hearing” allow for the public to make comments and ask questions. Once the public hearing is closed, the public typically no longer has the ability to make comments for the remainder of the session.
Quick facts:
Meetings are always on Tuesdays at 6pm at the Administration Building (503 E. Main Street) unless otherwise posted;
Meetings typically last thirty minutes to an hour depending on how many and what topics are being discussed; and
Relevant documents are always available to the public on the Village website.
Beginning next month, Everything Mahomet will review the Village government meeting minutes and share information about topics covered and any votes that take place. In the meantime, consider perusing the Board of Trustees meeting packet from May, which includes the FY2027 (May 2026-April 2027) budget for the Village. A narrative of this budget can be found on pages 48-57.
