The Fourth of July falls on Saturday this year, which means the celebration spirit will last all weekend long. Here are a few ideas to help you celebrate America’s 250th anniversary of independence, right here in the Mahomet-Seymour area:

Get ready for your celebration with two opportunities to make patriotic crafts.

  • On July 1 (2-3 p.m.), Museum of the Grand Prairie will offer a Cultural Crafts event where kids can learn the history behind the colors red, white and blue while they enjoy a flower-dye activity. (Register by June 27) Free

  • On July 1 (5-7 p.m.), Village Garden Shoppe will host a workshop where participants can create a red, white and blue floral centerpiece (Register here) $35

Teens have a special opportunity to explore town on Thursday, July 2 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) with MAYC's Amazing Race. Participants will race with a team to gather clues and complete challenges. (Businesses contribute to the race by creating the clues and acting as race stops.) Register by June 30. More info can be found here!

Then, kick off the weekend with Mahomet Parks and Recreation’s rescheduled Neighborhood Nights concert!

  • On Thursday, July 2 (6-8 p.m.) The Casual Blend will perform a mix of pop, blues, country, and oldies music at Barber Park. Grab dinner at the food trucks and bring your own chairs or blanket to enjoy the music!

On Saturday, head to Seymour for their traditional parade, which begins on July 4 at 10 a.m. A few tips:

  • Arrive early to find parking, available along Route 10

  • Walk into town to set up anywhere along Main Street; the parade goes through town

  • Bring your own chairs, as well as wagons and/or strollers for the walk

  • Plan for heat! The parade is notoriously hot

That evening, head back to Seymour for their fireworks display! Set off from Main Street, the fireworks will begin at dusk (around 9:15 p.m.).
